Republican Party – You’re Not Invited
The political season is starting to heat up yet again. While some of my LGBT family may choose to vote Republican and self-identify as Republican, you will never be Republican. The Republican party will take your gay money, time, and vote, that does not mean you are a Republican. It is a party and you’re not invited. Gay Republicans do not exist and it has everything to do with the party.
The Republican party platform has exclusion of gays built in, the 2012 Republican Platform states, “We believe that marriage, the union of one man and one woman must be upheld as the national standard, a goal to stand for, encourage, and promote through laws governing marriage,” and “We embrace the principle that all Americans should be treated with respect and dignity,” (Renewing American Values to Build Healthy Families, Great Schools and Safe Neighborhoods, p. 31).
And 2013, “the Republican National Committee implores the U. S. Supreme Court to uphold the sanctity of marriage in its rulings on California’s Proposition 8 and the Federal Defense of Marriage Act.”
2015, Republicans in Texas adopt similar language. While “traditional marriage” protections only appear in the platform the Republicans don’t stop there are persecuting LGBTs. Countless political attacks on gays through “Religious Freedom Bills”, court case resistance, and public comments comparing gay-sex to bestiality. The Republican party sends a clear signal, “We hate you fags”. We are after all the worlds favorite punching bag.
Being the target of political oppression is not new for us, nor is it as bad as it once was. Remember back to WW2 era, there were gays who identified as Nazis. Those gays were still on the first trains to the death camps. In the words of a non-gay survivor: “I saw quite a number of pink triangles. I don’t know how they were eventually killed. … One day they were simply gone.” Part of you, part of you being gay, should be inclusion and acceptance of others and views that run counter to that should be opposed with strength and furor. Because that group may be the excluded and ridiculed group of the day but LGBTs are on the list for tomorrow.
Love the Republican party all you want just remember you will never be a Republican because they hate you. Accept that the Republican party will never let you into their dirty little hate club and move on to find a club that will gladly accept you and your gay money.
Why do you identify as a gay Republican? What turns you off about the Republican party?
